In regards to ratty having never worked in the industry, I would imagine that he would have picked up a lot as he has been around for years, he would definitely have been privy to way more info then if only a top twenty holder.
It could be similar to saying you have to go to uni to be make something of your Life, many self made tycoons (who didn’t go to uni) actually end up employing these graduates.
