"Are people really so afraid of acknowledging that their world is less secure than they would like?" That is a factor of course.
The biggest factor I see is the magnitude of the cover up that is being proposed here. And that no one involved has come forth with an accusation that they where somehow involved.
You are talking a massive amount of people to instigate this...If it is what you propose it is...
