yes Aussie, not a particularly fair rule on an rediculously complex taxation system. Diversification minimises ones chances of ending up in that boat but even the diverification strategy comes unstuck then chasing too many shooting stars, ah la ABC, MST etc.

Personally I think that the so called "progressive" tax system is rediculous, wasteful, and overly complex, not to mention unfair. "Progressive" tax necessitates arbitrary income type classification which ringfences losses from one type thus leaving people in the situation such as the one you are in.
