on the chart, the resistance is a level which implies there is an urge to sell. it is just a technical idea, not a fact. it may relate to volume that has traded there previously, implying that if a stock has been underwater for people, there would be a number of people seeking to break even. it may also correlate to technical trading signals, such as moving averages, trend channels, fib points etc. in the real world, resistance can pop up anywhere, technical analysis just attempts to predict where and when.
