Government bans sale of certain medicines

In wake of forthcoming monsoon season in the national capital that generally witnesses spike in cases of dengue and other vector-borne diseases, the city’s public health department has decided to invoked a ban on NSAIDs or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin, dispirin, brufen, voveran, etc from August 15 till November 30.
A variety of NSAID combinations are easily available — often as over-the-counter products — across the city and these combinations are the easiest way of selling two drugs when one (or even none) may be needed for the patient. But experts assert that the use of these drugs pose threat to dengue patients, as these may add to the haemorrhage symptoms and can cause death in dengue patients.
“The NSAIDs drugs — aspirin, disprin, brufen, voveran etc. — to be banned from August 15 till November 30 for over the counter (OTC) sale by chemists,” a senior government official said, adding that it would be sold by chemists only on the basis of prescription by qualified doctors.
The decision was taken on Saturday, following a meeting by city health minister Satyendra Jain to the preparedness for dengue and other vector-borne diseases in Delhi. Officers from various agencies and hospitals across the national capital attended the meeting.
Mr Jain also directed medical superintendents at all hospitals in the city to procure NS1 antigen detection kits.
