florian,
sometimes humanity needs to believe in something greater, whatever the religion. This man found strength psycholologically through the hope and promises of the explanations of Christianity. However, IMO you can still obtain hope through something truthful or something fabricated so I wouldn't neccessarily consider your story to prove the truth of the gospel.
Interesting story, I think it may only be in SA, of a man who founded the Edge church, a massive church in SA. He often preached and wrote hymns on his battle with cancer which reportedly inspired countless Christians. It has recently been reported this man lied to people about his illness however, as he wasn't even sick (!). Now his lies still inspired people and no doubt encouraged people's beliefs even if they were not true.
Personally I would argue your story reflects the power of hope and security more than proving the truth of Christianity. If I tell a dying man he is going to be healed and he believes me, he will still be comforted whether there is truth in my words or not, so long as he BELIEVES. And perhaps such a lie would even aid him in his recovery.
I have nothing against Christians even though I do not believe in it and often consider whether it is not beneficial for many to believe in something that comforts you even if it is a falsehood.
And your sentiment should have been "sell". Ha ha just kidding.
