The anti-fossil fuel Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis says despite recent blackouts in South Australia, caused by its switch to renewable energy and disruptions from its interconnector with Victoria, the future of green energy in the state is strong because it can work.

The Australian Energy Market Operator recently concluded that South Australia’s power system can operate securely and reliably with a high percentage of wind and solar generation as long as either the Heywood Interconnector to Victoria is operational, and/or sufficient synchronous generation is connected and operating on the South Australian power system.

The advent of storage technology will further ease reliability and security concerns that have been raise, IEEFA said.

Rooftop solar panels will soon reach 28% penetration and wind energy meet 25% of the state’s total capacity.

With the remaining brown coal plants to be shuttered by 2018, wiping out 13% of SA’s capacity, the state will rely even more on renewables, and could soon start to shut down its gas fired plants.

“Change is coming fast to South Australia, a real-time laboratory for the transformation from a fossil fuel-dominated electricity supply system to one based on renewables,” IEEFA said.

    Weltec Biopower

One of Australia's most innovative biogas projects, being developed in suburban Melbourne, by German biogas plant manufacturer Weltec and project partner Aquatec Maxcon will generate 1MW from the anaerobic digestion of organic waste will be one of the first of its kind in Australia.

The plant will allow Yarra Valley Water to become energy self-sufficient at its Aurora plant, and may even generate an unused surplus can be fed into the public grid.

The purpose built waste-to-energy facility will provide an environmentally sustainable solution for commercial organic wastes, generating enough renewable energy to run the existing sewage and recycled water treatment plants
