Japan launched a sneak attack at Pearl harbour. Admittedly they wanted to declare war just before the attack, but that's not how it turned out. The attack came first. A sneak attack like that gave the American people an appetite for war.
Their industrial might hit top gear and so began the build up of their military forces.
By the time the Americans invaded Iwo Jima, their military was stretched thin and so was the funding. The American people had lost the appetite for war.
Enter the two nukes I was referring to.
This was a short cut if you like to ending the war.
No private gun ownership needed.
