you're suggesting we keep manufacturing and running ICE vehicles until battery manufacturing is more environmentally friendly?

I would suggest that the manufacturing and use of an EV over 5 years would have a far better enviro impact than an ICE, not to mention the pressure it puts on the energy market to increase capacity, and those power companies in turn have pressure to continue their transition to renewables.

So regardless of how the batteries are manufactured the effect on the environment is going to be positive, and it won't stop progressing.
