Hybrids have only begun! Imo the Gen 3 Prius (2004 model) was not a huge advance on the Gen 2 (2002), but it is rumoured that the Gen 4 will make remarkable advances, both on fuel economy and on performance.

People will be buying them for performance before long, with fuel economy as a byproduct.

Don't forget the Toyota hybrids drivetrain is radically different and is an enabling technology. Eventually enabling electrical plug in, and fuel cells for low load etc, as batteries and fuel cells develop.

Anyway their future will be nickel free (fortunately).
