FYI the article "Toyota Takes a Big Step to Secure Lithium Supplies But What of Plug-ins?" contains the usual spurious arguments against a rising market for Lithium.
For example:
"Few supply concerns" - so why is Toyota acting now?
"Viability of PHEV's" - even if we just went to HEV's then there would be significant extra demand on top of a historically increasing market demand for Li.
"..economic premise only works if you are willing to assume that historically moderate trends in retail electricity prices will continue forever" - if electricity is going up, then perhaps oil will too? Because the cost of charging the battery is so small, even increasing electricity cost by an order of magnitude and not increasing the oil price will still leave the PHEV as economic.
etc, etc.
Perhaps I'm a bit pious because I drive a Prius (, and a Subaru). Both cost about $40k for the base model, so the usual argument about cost HEV's seems a bit spurious (Prius doesn't have an expensive gear box). The Prius is bigger (more cabin space), and has better straight line acceleration. I know from first hand experience that oil (petrol) consumption would drop by more than half if we all drove hybrids.
Looks to me that ORE has a great future. Sadly (or maybe happily) I sold all my holding for a 500% gain. Was just looking to buy in again when this announcement came along! Bought a small holding yesterday.
