Bluetooth was highlighted as the biggest challenge to overcome for all wireless ear devices....the CES panel (see clip posted with David Cannington) mentioned that Bluetooth quality between phone manufacturers is hugely variable and the onus really was on phone manufacturers to improve the capability in this regard....I gather air pods will have exactly the same issue and will force apple et al to focus their efforts on improving the Bluetooth reception on upcoming phones.
