    I'm no expert on ETF's but there seems to be another possibility. The ASX 200 are not equally liquid. As the fund managers have to change holdings to mimic the index, it can be more difficult to exit the lower-liquidity holdings, especially when a rout is on. This problem undermines fidelity to the index. The problem gets worse when fund managers invest in derivatives to try to better mimic the index. This is not an original thought. It comes from recent writing of Michael Burry (The Big Short guy) which is readily available on the net.
