Depending on where you are going, you will find that most hotels now have wired & or wireless internet in rooms & a lot also have wireless throughout the hotel.
If you are going "on the cheap" & your digs aren't connected then just wander into a up market hotel coffee shop or say pool area & you will probably be able to get online (you may have to either bluff a staff member to "remind" you of the hotel's network name, or get friendly with a fellow guest using their notebook & elicit the required info).
So if you take a laptop with wireless (wi-fi) network capability you should have no problem .... lots of other coffee shops, public places etc also have wireless public access networks too.
You can also get what is essentially a mobile phone card to plug into your laptop that will allow you to access the internet at bradband speeds (as long as the host phone network is 3G or more preferably HSDPA): eg http://www.threemobilebroadband.com.au/ .... buy the card & swap out the simm cards for various places you visit [this method is more practical if you are staying in one place for a while & don't have access to a wi-fi signal]
Finally, this idea is also starting to take off too: http://www.tomizone.com/
So in short, if you have a laptop you should be able to get safely connected one way or another.
Have purposely ignored the internet cafe option due to the extreme safety requirement when accessing your financial info.
