I think a trading halt would occur only in the event that an in-principle agreement had been reached, but the final details were yet to be hammered out. ie they would go into a halt to protect themselves from the possibility of information leaking out.
Outside of that possibility, I would think an after-market announcement would be the most likely outcome.
Just my thoughts...
