Take for example stop hunting. There is an almost universal belief that someone is out there forcing the direction of the market by flooding it with buy or sell orders in a deliberate and controlled manner. But there are thousands of banks and hedge funds trading at any point in time. At the same time that ABC Bank is dropping $1B into the market to raise the price, XYZ Hedge fund is dropping their $1B in to lower the price. To influence the price in order to take out stops like this would require them all to collaborate.
