Hi @PrincessKate. Thanks for your updates.I’d really like you to help me understand something. You mentioned that GSW was the only player that has the funds to transition their platform into an AI product, but I’m struggling to see how this could be true. Any provider of similar services could easily implement AI on their platform, but the questions is, what’s the desired objective and how would it be achieved?
The difficulty with AI isn’t necessarily the expertise (it’s all black boxed), it’s the data acquisition that’s hard. You mentioned that it’s expensive - what part exactly are you talking about?
So let’s actually take the time to unpack what their product does at the moment, it helps companies schedule drivers and optimise routes. How does it do this? GSW probably leverages the google maps API for directions and a few other off the shelf APIs for other things (just like Uber). They probably have a fairly rudimentary algorithm that decides which location comes first, second ….. last.
So far, it’s pretty simple right? Just wrapping some exisiting technologies.Let’s start talking AI. What would be the goal of the AI implementation? Would it be to better pick the route order? Let’s say that you’re a milk delivery driver and you have 10 ten deliveries to make. How would you use AI to improve this task? The orders are going to be different each time so there’s no real way to run logistic or linear regression against the previous data sets to see if you’re improving. And the conditions / externalities will always be different (because of different traffic conditions). So Google maps will probably always be the most reliable way to get from one location to the next. So from my (admittedly amateur) perspective, I just can’t see how any data engineer could really approach this problem and decide that there could be a feasible way to find an improvement.
All of these questions become even more complex in a place like Manila which has awful traffic (I’m speaking from experience). Remember, they are only doing the last mile, so there’s actually very little space for optimisation.I’d really like you to shed some light on this if possible.
