    Justinmetals,

Gas content information is generally obtained from cores, retrieved from the well in the shortest possible time, sealed to keep the core sample from degassing to ambient, sent to the lab where they degas the samples under controlled conditions, measuring pressure, degas volume and gas composition among other things. One of the tests can be desorption, releasing the molecular bound gas from the sample. This does not imply permeability in a direct sense, permeability is largely a function of the number of butts, cleats, fractures and how these are connected, as these provide the path for dewatering (depressurization, causing the gas to be released) and subsequent gas production.

strat wells are primarily for ascertaining lithology, the chips provide this info, when they come to surface they may still be bubbling gas, that will be the most info you get about gas in the samples. the chips will not provide info on permeability, the logging might be able to provide info on that depending on the tools they run, image logs.

The best info on permeability will always be testing the wells, this will provide more details on the connectivity of the fracture further away from the well.
