Speculation only but it could work for them either way. Once you get used to index rebalances they can be a really good time to make trades. I have bought gold stocks a few pips below trading price due to volume in the auction and then flipped them on Monday morning for a quick profit. With regards to shorts you would be watching how the close was going to go (in today's case didn't even move), however if it looked like closing high might be a good time to use the volume to drop a bunch of shorts, conversely if it looked like closing low maybe a good time to use the volume to cover a bunch of shorts. In today's case of no price impact well either option could be true. It is just a good opportunity to use liquidity that isn't normally there.
