@MemeFx - I remember, when a child (in Vienna - a long time ago!) - men sitting in front of small coffee houses and playing chess on little tables and a crowd gathering around who discussed the game 'sotto voce' and sometimes not so, and they were then told off by the players - my favourite uncle was a passionate player.
I also saw this happening in parks in Croatia when I was there for a holiday.
You are right about Eastern Europeans - I hope they haven't given up - now with the advent of the internet (and Covid, of cours) everyone is becoming more home-centered.
