Flaring is no guarantee of producing gas, but you wouldn't produce much gas without it :)
It's a bit like opening a coke bottle sometimes...you can get a lot of fizz and then a trickle of bubbles, but for the most part it's a good sign and hopefully will be more like someone opening the valve :)
Another interesting side note to consider is that saturated chalks can make excellent storage areas too...C02 sequestration anyone? If you can run CO2 into a reservoir, you get gas lift on the reservoir and you get carbon sequestration...nice in these ETS times.
