Woolworths and Coles says recent flooding is behind product shortages in Perth stores this Easter

Some items are going to be hard to come by this Easter.

Woolworths and Coles say major flooding on the Nullarbor has taken a toll on stock levels in Perth, with the supermarket giants warning that some items may be hard to come by this Easter.

A notice posted at Woolworths in Highgate alerted customers to “product shortages” because of recent extreme weather that has hurt supply chains.

Long-life items including canned fruit, veg and pasta, juice, yoghurt and healthy snack options are affected.

“We are working with a number of local suppliers across WA to support the delivery of fresh items like meat, eggs, fruit and veg to our stores,” a spokesperson said.

“Additional stock from Sydney or Melbourne is being transported by road due to the ongoing rail closures.”

Easter products including chocolate eggs and bunnies have not been impacted by the delays.

“There are no product limits in place but we ask customers to be mindful of others to help everyone access essential products,” the supermarket spokesperson said.

Coles said there could be some shortages of chilled, dairy and bakery products over the coming days because of supply chain issues.

“We are working hard with our suppliers to get deliveries into the state by road, with rail deliveries ready to go once the rail route reopens,” Coles said.

“At Coles, we aim to source meat, produce and milk locally from Western Australia.

“This means that our customers can be reassured that while we might have some shortages on some chilled, dairy and bakery lines over the coming days due to challenges in the supply chain due to the rail disruption, our team will continue to work hard to keep our stores stocked with the essentials they need.”

The Trans-Australian Railway line, a key freight route running between WA and South Australia through the Nullarbor, was closed earlier this month because floodwaters had inundated parts of the track.

The Eyre Highway — the main road connecting WA with SA — was also closed because of flooding but has re-opened.
