Doors, I think its a great idea. The only cost I think will be the brokerage when you sell the ones that dont have SPPs. Let's say that's 100 stocks x $19.95 brokerage thats $1995 to sell the
However for the ones that do have SPPs that cost doesnt exist because you'd sell those individual shares when you sell the SPP units you pick up.
You'd have to assume that if you accumulate long enough there will be more than enough SPPs to make enough profit that the cost of selling the odd ones left over will be relatively small.
