The chief executive of Loy Yang Power, Ian Nethercote, says carbon capture and storage on a commercial scale is at least a decade away from reality.

Mr Nethercote says the pilot program at Loy Yang has proven that carbon capture will work.

But he says turning that technology into a viable system will take a number of years.

He says other sustainable technologies are also a long way from replacing the conventional coal-fired power generation industry.

"One of the things that is not well understood or accepted at the moment is that the technology is not there that's going to allow be it solar or wind-power or any of those particular mechanisms to take the place of fossil fuel over the next number of years," he said.
