I have said this before, the disused coal pits and shafts at the foot of the Illawarra escarpment north of Wollongong would make excellent lower reservoirs for PHES.

There are several reservoirs (some no longer in use) on the plateau directly above. The height of the plateau is between 300 and 700 metres.

All this, a short distance from Australia’s biggest city.
