Hope patient is well as USA medical and legal costs are crazy.
Personally there are places I would never go without full cover and USA is on that list.
complimentary travel insurance is one to be very wary of as conditions and fine print change and must read full document and comply completely some have conditions in regards to notifying travel, must buy on card , limited number of days per visit and annually.limited countries, limited stopovers, complicated claim process and documents etc etc.
Very wary of things like minors, dependents as they can have special meanings. May be many limits to cover .
As log as you are aware and do the required reading every trip Ok but most don't
Reading teh policy before purchase is a must for all travel insurance and worth asking if you have a insurance broker for all your other policys to get a quote as rebates etc to brokers once split back to you will make a difference and worth looking at annual multitrip policies as well.
Choice and canstar have done some good comparison tables in the past but check every year as policy change and can change significantly.
