    Hank,
I've always found the best way to be with a VISA card.
Exchange rate is good - you don't have to carry large amounts of cash with you, and can simply go into a bank with your passport in those countries to access a cash advance (or an ATM if you're game with a pin number, but I opt for safety!)

Keep photocopies of ALL your documents with someone home in Aus in case of loss, and have the VISA internation number with you as they will instantly put a hold on your card and reissue a new one in any country if you lose it, have it stiolen etc.
A VISA card, if you book your holiday flights on it also gives you some half decent free travel insurance. (That might be just our gold cards, so check that out)

I'm sure others will have their own ideas, but you can gather them and make up your own mind....I hate Travellers cheques, and Visa just works for the currency of the country you're in!

    Cheers...and enjoy your travel.
