One theory being put about on similar lines is:
Living trees absorb co2, dying trees omit co2.
The Amazon rainforest is absorbing co2 rapidly and is growing at the fastest rate ever know. Over the next 50 years not only will the rate of absorbtion decrease, but the rainforest will omit more than it absorbs, as the trees decay.
