President-elect Donald J. Trump is likely to build a Cabinet full of familiar faces from the campaign trail — though some could face a tough road to Senate confirmation. The following are potential picks:
Chief of staff:
Mr. President: Donald Trump takes the White House
Chris Christie
Christie is thought to be Trump’s choice as attorney general, but his ongoing Bridgegate problems make him a better fit for a job that does not require the Senate’s OK.
Senior advisers:
Jared Kushner, Newt Gingrich
Trump’s son-in-law and the former House Speaker have served vital roles in Trump’s campaign, and that likely would continue in the White House. Trump’s daughter Ivanka also could join them if she accompanies her husband to Washington.
Secretary of State:
John Bolton
The former U.S. ambassador to the U.N. has been an unwavering Trump supporter.
Treasury Secretary:
Steven Mnuchin
The banking executive and film producer was tapped to be finance chairman of Trump’s campaign. He’d have a steep road to Senate confirmation, but Trump would likely stick by his man.
Defense Secretary:
Michael Flynn
The retired three-star Army general has been one of Trump’s top surrogates on the campaign trail.
Attorney General:
U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy
His congressional probe of Hillary Clinton’s role in the Benghazi attack earned Trump’s admiration.
Health and Human Services Secretary:
Ben Carson
The retired neurosurgeon came to political prominence with his blistering criticism of Obamacare. Trump could give him the task of dismantling it.
Energy Secretary:
Sarah Palin
Trump will face pressure to include women in his Cabinet. The former Alaska governor and GOP vice presidential candidate’s famous “drill, baby, drill” stance and strong Trump alliance make her a top contender.
Homeland Security Secretary:
Rudy Giuliani
The former New York City mayor and onetime U.S. attorney has embraced Trump’s law-and-order stance and is the architect of Trump’s “extreme vetting” plan, a reboot of his previous proposal to ban all Muslims from entering the country.
