Whether it's stupid to be against it is not the point. This is a democracy, not a totalitarian state so policies need to be what the majority want or they will eventually be overturned. The nonsense arguments against a plebiscite are just that, nonsense. Any campaign against will likely be more nasty if the politicians try to push it through as it will empower the likes of Bernadi and will gain him a lot of supporters.
