The deal is about materially gaining size, filling a production gap and reducing cost to allow for a higher P/E.
Which of these would be a significant benefit to Anglogold at that price. The Idea of mergers and the buy is the intention of 1 + 1 aiming to make 2.5.
Simplistic thinking or lack of experience and imagination on your behalf.
As for destroyed value, the stock is a significantly larger market cap than previously. FUther gains to come as per strategy in my comment above.
