There was a trail where the defence were involved selecting the jury, the defence could have put up what ever argument the wanted, called witnesses and put up evidence.

They could are argued it was Concocted laws, linking misdemeanour, statute of limitations,to a felony
They could have argued it was all about election interference.
They could have questioned what the crime was
ect, ect .ect

End of the day the defence didn't need to prove the Fat Orange Turd was innocent, they only need to prove reasonable doubt which is a pretty low burden.

Well guess what they failed and the jury found the Fat Orange Turd you worship Guilty on all counts beyond a reasonable doubt.
