For the US, having trade deficits doesn't mean they're losing. If US consumers are buying then the US is winning. If the focus on trade surpluses means the US consumer economy stalls as US consumers stop buying, then they really will start losing.

I have a trade deficit with Coles, anz bank, Caltex, Bunnings, hungry jacks, CUB etc.. am I a loser? Should I grow my own verges and make my own booze? luckily I have a trade surplus with my employer. Trade and commerce is all about sourcing goods from countries and companies that are most efficient price wise, Trump saying Americans are losing for not manufacturing certain goods is idiotic
