Trouble with compulsory voting is that is that you are forcing people to vote who don't care and don't want to vote. Not voting is effectively saying you accept the result of what the majority who voted.
The voter turn out depends on the issues at the time, in 2020 covid and how poorly Trump was handling the pandemic was a huge issue and hence the record voter turn out
