As we get closer to November the prospect of a 2nd Trump presidency increases daily.
Now , I struggle to have much sympathy for the US , the fact that any more than a handful of people would vote for this sociopath , defies belief.
If they want to live in a semi theocratic dictatorship , good luck to them.
However , what about the rest of us , specifically defense.
MAGA seems intent on diminishing the US's influence in the world and looking out for number 1.
Nato looks to be the first casualty.
Garbage rhetoric comparing Europe's defense spending to the total US spending, forgetting that the US spends lots of money in areas which really arent that relevant to Europe , form the basis of the Trumpish cry of , ''it's not fair''.
Europe cannot rely on the US , it is better off with a pan-European treaty and defense force, and should work towards a divorce.
After such a divorce , China will drop the Putinists like a hot potato.
In the East , do I trust a Trumpish US to come to our aid.
Sorry , but , not a bit.
I read some garbage that we need the US nuclear umbrella , so what does the US do if China drops a nuke on Adelaide , my bet is bugger-all , they are hardly going to retaliate and put their own cities at risk.
So , I think Anzus and Aukus are also fos .
They are vehicles by which the US can use our troops in their various adventures , often in areas where we have no need to be..
They will only come to our aid if it suits them.
So , as I have whined before , no more armed forces suited for deputy sherriff duties , but conventional forces to make invasion [not an attack] of Australia , not worthwhile. We also aim to increase our relationships with countries around us.
Australia having nuclear weapons doesn't help us by the way , and may make us more of a target.
We can afford to be more independent.
cheers
