he's not an "idiot" but incredibly "smart"..... not intelligent, he has a very low emotional IQ, yet unintelligent people can be/are smart enough to notice key markers for manipulating others. in a sense that genius is often seen as the ability to understand others and find answers that matter, regardless of truth, Trump understands a subculture that feels offended by progressive changes in culture and politics that they suspect deprives them of something..... like free speech and other freedoms.
these people want no regulation, no policing that affects their desires for money and "glory" in their own minds. they want an anarchic world where the bullies can thrive and steal from those they see as too stupid to be "smart".
Trump also projects a charisma that appeals to these people. he typifies their ideal model of success.
you're right Trump is not intelligent, but he's a very talented, and smart, con man.
