White House seizes on Mitch McConnell's remarks that Trump stalled action on border security

In a new statement, the White House cited comments by the Senate Republican leader to argue that Trump rejected a compromise on a border deal for political gain.

Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY): “One of the things that I keep reminding my members is if we had a 100% Republican government — president, House, Senate — we probably would not be able to get a single Democratic vote to pass what Sen. [James] Lankford and the administration are trying to get together,” he told reporters. “So this is a unique opportunity to accomplish something in divided government.

But after four months of border policy negotiations, which McConnell had personally called for and repeatedly supported, the GOP leader said the deal lacks support in his conference. And he noted staunch opposition from House Republican leadership.


A majority of the Republican conference earlier this year voted against advancing the legislation after former President Trump urged GOP lawmakers to oppose the measure, indicating it would give Biden a political win.
