Money. Qaddafi wanted his money backed by gold which could have been an alternative to the French Franc on the Francophone African countries; its why Sarkozy went to war with Libya. US simply would have gained by helping topple Qaddafi by having no future competition (A strong pan-African currency to compete with francophone African countries and western world).

Africa has the richest amount of resources in the world yet they have some of the poorest countries in the world. Even China now is copping some of the western propaganda for taking the resources of Africa but in return helping with infrastructure because the western world see it as a threat and future competition economically.

Its why America hates Russia because its just another country which can be as strong as the US and must be squashed because they want to remain top dog. At the end of the day the only thing that matters is the dollar and people will use manipulation of morality and emotions to convince people to make them more money (downramping on sharemarket for example).
