except it wasn’t particularly political. Trump used to complain that he wasn’t accepted by the New York “elites”. He ignored the fact that he wasn’t accepted because he had purportedly for years cheated people - he had a reputation for cheating on deals, not paying debts, strong arming and the like. And this was way before he ever became so well known.
