Hi: not quite correct - the family name was 'Drumpf' but that was 180 years before Friedrich Trump migrated; that's Donald's grandfather' Friedrich Trump was a barber but already showed a nose for business which is a Trump characteristic and followed the gold diggers to Seattle where he opened a number of pubs which offered not only alcohol but female company (the two pubs he owned were called the "Poodle Dog" in Seattle which was a restaurant/pub which also offered "Private Rooms for Ladies' which was then code for prostitution and the pub 'Whitehorse' in the Klondike had velvet-curtained separès, again for the use of the lonely gold diggers.) He eventually went back to his native town, Kallstadt, in Germany to find a wife and returned to the U.S. with her. BTW the 'Heinz' family of ketchup fame also came from Kallstadt. Trumps wife got homesick and he tried to pull up roots and return to Germany altogether but was returned by the German authorities to the U.S., because they thought he had previously tried to renege from his army service in Germany, but he was a U.S. citizen by then, so they couldn't charge or arrest him and 'sent back' this migrant. His son Fred was 11 years old when WWI broke out and all migrants of German origin in the U.S. tried to fit in and changed their names and pretended they were other nationalities. At the outbreak of WWII Fred (Donald's father) said he was of Swedish origin. Donald's mother has Scottish antecedents. Grandfather Friedrich died young and his wife continued in the restaurant/pub business, whereas Fred made his money in real estate. You will find a cleaned-up Trump family history (without the 'Ladies') on Wikipedia since Trump became president - before Christmas the info was exactly as this extract from the 'Süddeutsche Zeitung', but since then has been changed.
