its the rule - not the exception - that moderate voters split their vote - we do it in Australia all the time

We used to vote liberals to run the country but aust. democrats/labour to hold the senate. Still do most of the time - just no democrat party anymore

Moderate voters generally want right wing to run the country because they are more trusted on economics - sometimes incorrectly but nonetheless it remains the baseline thinking - but people dont want them to scuttle safety nets - which is what happens when hardline right wingers get too much power

Same reason Labor lost here - they would have had it except they grabbed the 3rd rail and started talking about messing with retiree dividends

US election shows this again in spades - its a swing vote against trump the person/ceo - but for the largely vanilla 'republican' playbook economic policies he employed

Imo thats why AOC is blowing up - she and the other mathematically illiterate progressives are being hectored by moderate Dems for costing them the chance at winning the house/senate - because less than 20% of Americans want their more radical economic policies

that said - US is so low information and right skew generally - they think having universal health/hospital coverage is a socialist idea. When its the rule in most 1st world market based economies

if it wasnt for covid mismanagement Trump would have been returned - simply because of the economic preference + the effectiveness of reps scaremongering against those various Dems policy ideas.
