@pintohoo - I am not sure about your last sentence 'most worthy of nothing more than contempt' - otherwise I agree.
You are lucky if you have been exposed to a way of life, which forced you to use your judgment, your wisdom, sometimes 'wiles' against or for your fellow humans. We are not all so lucky - and the majority just want to live a peaceful life and not too much disturbance.
The problem with the people who voted for Trump is that they felt they were ignored, maybe even discarded by 'the system' hence wanted a revolution and saw Trump as their hero. Like so many former and often truly 'revolutionary' heroes he is failing them.
Also look at the values modern 'society' imparts its young (and older) - it is all about 'me, me, me' and; 'how can I get rich, because only if i am rich (or richer) or more beautiful, have more muscles, a better car, better house etc. I can be happy' - there is absolutely no emphasis these days anymore on citizenship, fellowship, looking out for each other. Trump is a true representative of this value system - I was stunned by one of Musks' remarks in the oval office when he congratulated Trump on having had the Eagle on the ceiling redone in 'gold'!!! It seemed like a 'Women's Weekly' comment on the hostess' decorating skills . . . laughable.
Sooner or later Trump will be found to be 'the Emperor with no Clothes' - hopefully sooner, rather than later. and: that America is a power in declines has been obvious for a very long time - Trump is the last catalyst.
Go well
