Very stupid': Trump blasts Ukraine's use of long-range US missiles

US President-elect Donald Trump called the decision by outgoing President Joe Biden to allow Ukraine to attack Russia with long-range Western weapons "a very stupid thing to do."

"I don't think they should have allowed missiles to be shot 200 miles into Russia. I think that was a bad thing," Trump said.

"I don't think that should have been allowed ... certainly not just weeks before I take over," he told journalists on Monday.

Speaking at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida at his first press conference since his election victory at the beginning of November, Trump also described Biden's move as a "big mistake."

Trump did not rule out reversing the decision after he takes office at the end of January.

Biden in November authorized Kiev to use powerful long-range US weapons, called ATACMS, deep inside Russia, under certain conditions.

Trump again urged that the war be ended quickly. He did not, however, provide any details of exactly how he envisages this.

When asked whether he had already spoken to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump did not answer. He also did not give a clear answer to the question of whether Ukraine should cede territory to Russia in order to end the fighting.

"Well, I'll let you know after my first meeting," he said. It remained unclear exactly what he meant by this.

Trump also said that he had not invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to his inauguration on January 20.

But Trump added: "If he wants to come, I'd love to have him there."
