Greenland has massive reserves of rare earth minerals, in particular lithium, in an era of security of battery supply. Not to mention the strategic value of a US security presence in the Artic to counter Russian and Chinese moves in the area.

Hence Trump wants access to these strategic minerals and will seek a lease deal with Denmark in a win/win deal for related parties. Ignore his opening gambits of a take over, it's merely how this transactional president rolls.

So no, he will not be invading Greenland, only leasing what's needed. He will also, however, bolster the existing US military presence there in order to not only protect US operations and investments in Greenland but also to project power in the region.

Trump's remarks on Greenland are about lithium, according to Bill O'Reilly. He says the Trump administration wants to reduce its dependence on China.
"Lithium is the No. 1 product (China mines)," O'Reilly said on "On Balance." "Under the permafrost, in Greenland, is a lot of lithium. That's what this is about."
