It makes sense PROVIDING THEY CAN FIND THE MONEY, it will be expensive.
The thinking until now has been that smaller air-superiority fighters can be taken to the fight on a carrier or with aerial refuelling. While the fighter may be very small on radar, neither the tanker nor carrier are, and become easy targets. No need to find the fighter if you can take out it's support.
Necessity dictates fighters have much longer range and still have loiter time over target. The aircraft need bigger RADAR and ever more jamming equipment so electricity demand skyrockets and a much bigger, more powerful a/c becomes a necessity to carry all that extra fuel.
