Menzies was inept from start to finish but the population was uninterested.
Most unfair end comment. Anecdotally - I was attending political gatherings on the banks of the Yarra towards its end and I doubt that a similar venue would attract anywhere near as many participants today. Discussion was robust and funny.
In political terms that government period saw the split in Labor through the rise of the DLP and also the short rise and fall of communism in Australia - I believe that the population was very politically aware.
