"Why wouldn't they let it automatically charge in the wee small hours overnight when there is surplus electricity ?

How - only work if coal or gas are doing the usual heavy lifting - cannot rely on wind Or solar or battery charging meeting demand over night 24/7/365

Or during the day when there is an excess of solar

How??? Most go to work..are you suggesting a charge point for everycar on the road & at every car space..what a waste of resources..bandaide solution & NOT addressing the problem.

And what makes it worse is it is not even saving the planet.
