Marum, I wasn't talking about Diesel Electric locos or haul trucks, they have been around for much longer than I have been alive. In the Pilbara BHP, RIO and Roy Hill have all ordered battery electric locomotives from Wabtec to transport their iron ore to port. They have huge batteries, currently 7 to 10MW but plan on going larger. The big plus is regen braking in undulating terrain coupled with the fact that they start high up fully loaded, go down to port then do the uphill return journey unloaded using up the stored power. In some cases the EV loco will team up with a conventional one to make a huge hybrid and digital route optimisation results in huge fuel savings.

Hydrogen is a good clean fuel for an ICE or a fuel cell but that's where the story ends. Making it is very inefficient, if you start out with electricity convert it to hydrogen for storage then reconvert to electricity you only have 30% of what you started with, a lithium battery can give back 90%,a flow battery or pumped Hydro about 70%. Then with Hydrogen you have storage problems, it has to be kept and transported at extremely high pressure and the H2 molecule is so small it just goes into normal steel which makes it very brittle. That makes it more dangerous than any battery.
