Interesting to read the latest attempt by Pilot and Triangle to get out of their abandonment liability. What ever happened to the Offshore Wind fantasy?. That was attempt no.1 to get out of abandonment and that quietly went out the window when they realised how stupid an idea that was. Now its morphed into a carbon capture project. NOPTA and NOPSEMA must approve the issue of a Greenhouse Gas Storage Injection License and declare Cliff Head a Greenhouse Gas formation. Triangle and Pilot now only have a hydrocarbon production license which requires them to abandon the field at completion of economic hydrocarbon production at a huge cost that they cannot afford. And guess what they are at this point now. Do you really thing sending truck loads of oil to Geralton to be loaded onto a moored waiting ship as it gets slowly filled is economic?
So, what do you do?Try and re-badge it……to get out of this liability.Think from NOPTA’s viewpoint. Here are two underfunded minnows trying to get out of their abandonment liability by saying “oh yes we’ll make is a carbon capture and storage field”Please……. The undersea pipeline is past its useful life and is full of corrosion. It cannot be re-used for high pressure CO2 injection. The other pipeline that reinjects the water is in the same boat.The wells have been operating past their design life and cannot be used for high pressure CO2 injection. The oil wells have a pump at the bottom. What will happen to all this infrastructure.Basically, all you have of any use is a well head facility. All the other equipment onshore and offshore will need to be removed, upgraded.Now the real issue.There is no CO2 in the region to inject. Sure, Strike are all talk about Project Haber but that is many years away. Green hydrogen in the region has no Co2 and the blue/grey hydrogen is many years away if at all in the region.SO NOPTA AND NOPSEMA – SEE THIS CCS ATTEMPT BY PILOT AND TRIANGLE AS A THINLY VEILED ATTEMPT TO GET OUT OF THEIR ABANDONMENT LAIBILITY. MAKE THEM ABANDON THE FIELD THERE IS NO REQUIREMENT FOR A CCS PROJECT IN THE AREA AT THIS TIME. IF THERE IS A NEED IN THE FUTURE, THE INDUSTRY WILL DEAL WITH THIS AND MORE THAN LIKELY ON LAND AND NOT OFFSHORE.
