As expected there was a great deal of interest in the teaser for the sale of the Tshipi manganese deposit in South Africa. All the usual suspects wanted to see what was there, UKM and South32 among them, but the most interesting companies to me were TSI, which in the final stages of buying ConsMin’s manganese properties, including the Ghana mine for its EMM operations and the closed Woodie Woodie mine in Australia, and Citic Dameng.
If TMI, which is planning a major expansion into silicomanganese, buys Tshipi it would suddenly move into the top tier of all manganese miners operating in three separate countries, and be a major supplier to manganese starved China. It would certainly change the dynamics of the market. It would also fit into China’s stated goal of buying raw materials for its operations rather than relying on foreign companies.
Also Citic Dameng, which operates four manganese mines in China: Waifu, Tiandeng, Daxin, and Changgou. All the mines are low-grade, i.e., less than 20% Mn. In addition, the company produces EMM, EMD and manganese tetroxide as well as silicomanganese. It also buys EMM in China to sell.
CITIC Dameng is also an ore merchant, trading 635,236 mt of ore in 2016 with a turnover of HK3.248-billion, up 29%. Finally the company under the Dushan Jinmeng banner, is building a 500,000 mtpy of manganese alloy plant with its own power supply.
